to what extent is the universe uncertain?
The universe is uncertain from the perspective of the viewer. The interaction of "viewpoint" with experience offers a level of uncertainty. Humans have free will, and we are the masters of our own destiny. The same situation can have a profoundly different impact based on the observation and the interaction with the viewer.
After discussing the articles in class it occurred to me the extent at which the universe is uncertain relies on our own allowance of the uncertainty which can also be described as bias. Of course, at a quantum level, though particles interact much as they do with the laws of physics, the implications are hardly graspable. Many perspectives are filter systems and are often clouded by belief systems. Discussing this from an Eastern Perspective, the terms non-conceptuality and illusion came up. From a western standpoint, the term predictability and probability resonated.
Recently I had the opportunity to look at my relationship with the unknown, which at first was quite scary. When I recognized that I could interact with the unknown, with curiosity my viewpoint shifted and expanded.
The term UNIVERSE-implies ONE ness. UNi-verse. Though recent evidence shows there are other galaxies, this is still part of the UNIVERSE (defined by wikipedia much better than I could: "the totality of everything that exists.") Because of our limited viewpoint here in this plane, we can't travel outside of our field, or into a black hole to determine how this happened. I wonder sometimes if it's really necessary that we try.

You make an interesting point about humans bringing our bias to effect the world around us. I feel like these uncertainty principles help to show how we are an integrated part of our world and it really shakes up our Western opinions of being separate and individual. We do have free will as you mentioned, but we are a part of a whole as well. A living breathing feeling whole where our minds seem plugged in to some cosmic consciousness. And our biases do change that consciousness somehow.
ReplyDeleteCuriosity is a very powerful tool indeed. Difficult to embrace with a child's mind, and easily overwhelmed by when the subject matter propels us in its direction.
ReplyDelete@poppy, our biases, thoughts intentions do have an impact on collective consciousness. I find this reiterated to me as I converse with friends. Strangely enough, when these synchronistic events occur, it is a reminder that though we are part of the collective, we must really maintain on our own and tend to our own issues to really heal that part of our relationships/reflections/issues that come up. And though it seems selfish (maybe a little from an eastern, but not western perspective) we are really doing a world of good by caring for ourselves as we best can. A term or concept that can describe this is self reliant interdependence.
ReplyDelete@Metta coming from that "childs mind" or "beginner's mind" and perhaps just a state of pure joy really helps frame my experience.
